Eyelid cancer removal and reconstruction

Eyelid Cancer Removal and Reconstruction

A diagnosis of skin cancer on the eyelid can be alarming — both because of its location and the uncertainty it can bring. Fortunately, most eyelid cancers are highly treatable, and with expert care, it is possible to remove the cancer safely while restoring the appearance and function of the eyelid.

Common Types of Eyelid Skin Cancer

The most common types of eyelid cancer are:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): This is the most frequent type, typically slow-growing and very unlikely to spread, but it can cause significant local damage if left untreated.

  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Less common but potentially more aggressive than BCC, with a higher chance of spreading if not addressed early.

Other, rarer cancers such as sebaceous gland carcinoma or melanoma may also affect the eyelid, but BCC and SCC make up the majority of cases.

How Is It Treated?

Treatment usually involves surgical removal of the tumour with a small margin of healthy tissue to ensure the cancer is fully cleared. In many cases, Miss Ting works alongside dermatologists or Mohs surgeons to achieve complete excision in a safe and precise manner, particularly when the cancer is close to the eyelid margin or in a cosmetically sensitive area.

Once the lesion is removed, reconstruction of the eyelid is required to restore both function and appearance.

Eyelid Reconstruction and Recovery

As a specialist oculoplastic surgeon, Miss Ting is experienced in reconstructive eyelid surgery, ensuring that the delicate balance of eyelid movement, eye protection, and appearance is carefully preserved.

Reconstruction is tailored to the size and location of the defect and may involve local flaps or grafts, depending on the extent of tissue removed. The aim is always to achieve a natural result that restores comfort and confidence.

Patients can expect:

  • A personalised surgical plan

  • Surgery under local or general anaesthetic, depending on the case

  • Regular follow-up to monitor healing and eyelid function

  • A professional yet compassionate approach throughout the process

A Supportive, Specialist-Led Approach

Miss Ting understands that facing a diagnosis of eyelid cancer can be distressing. She is committed to supporting patients with clear explanations, expert surgical care, and close collaboration with dermatology colleagues to ensure the highest level of care at every stage.
