Should I have surgery?

How Do I Know If I Need Surgery?

Deciding whether to proceed with surgery is a personal decision. Whether you’re considering treatment for a functional problem — such as droopy eyelids, watery eyes, or facial asymmetry — or for cosmetic reasons, it’s important to feel informed, supported, and confident about your next steps.

Miss Ting is a highly trained oculoplastic surgeon who takes time to explore all options with her patients. Her goal is not to “sell” surgery, but to help you understand what’s possible, what’s appropriate, and what will give the safest and most natural outcome for your individual case.

When Might Surgery Be Appropriate?

You might be considering surgery if:

  • You have functional symptoms such as blocked vision from heavy eyelids, chronic tearing, or eyelid malposition that causes irritation or infection

  • You’ve noticed asymmetry, hollowing, or puffiness around the eyes that affects your confidence or how others perceive you

  • You’ve tried non-surgical treatments (e.g. drops, Botox, filler) but have not achieved the desired result

  • You’re seeking a longer-term solution compared to temporary or repeat treatments

  • You have a benign or suspicious lesion that needs removal, or a diagnosis that requires reconstructive surgery

Miss Ting’s Approach to Surgical Planning

Miss Ting takes a measured, thoughtful approach to every case. During your consultation, she will:

  • Take a full medical and visual history

  • Carefully assess your concerns and anatomy

  • Discuss both surgical and non-surgical options

  • Explain risks, benefits, and likely outcomes

  • Provide honest advice about whether surgery is truly the best option for you

In many cases, surgery is not necessary, and a non-surgical or conservative approach may be better. If surgery is appropriate, you’ll have time to ask questions and reflect on your decision before proceeding.

What If I’m Still Unsure?

Feeling uncertain is completely normal. Surgery is a big step, and it’s important that you never feel rushed. Miss Ting encourages patients to take time to consider their options and will often provide written information or a follow-up appointment so that decisions can be made with clarity and confidence.

You are also welcome to seek a second opinion — Miss Ting supports a collaborative and transparent model of care.

Risks vs Benefits: What to Consider

Every procedure carries some degree of risk, whether medical, functional, or cosmetic. Miss Ting will explain these risks clearly and help you weigh them against the potential benefits. She will also assess any factors that may increase your surgical risk — such as dry eyes, previous surgeries, or general health issues — and tailor her advice accordingly. Your goals and individual factors will guide the discussion.

Taking the Next Step

If you're considering surgery but unsure whether it’s the right choice, booking a consultation is a good place to start. Miss Ting will listen to your concerns, provide expert guidance, and help you decide what’s best for you — whether that includes surgery or not.
